Bio: Born in Nebraska, he has also lived in Utah, California, and Ohio and has spent three years in Germany and one year in Austria. He earned a B.A. in German at BYU, a M.A. in German literature, and a Ph.D. in German language history and second language acquisition at Ohio State University. The author of more than seventy books and articles on German family history research and German pedagogy, he was a private contractor in family history for twelve years. He married Jeanne Gardner, and they have four adult daughters.

Courses Taught: Family history research, German family history research, German and Latin paleography

Areas of Expertise: German family history research, German language/dialects in old vital records, German and paleography.

Areas of Research: History of German church records, German immigrants in the United States, deciphering archaic manuscripts, German Latter-day Saints in World War II.

Languages: Native speaker of German, advanced speaker of Dutch, basic speaker of French and Spanish, reader of Latin in vital records.
